In May/June of 2009 , Heather, my wife and I visited Newfoundland for the first time. Our big regret was that we had not discovered it sooner.Below are a few images of the awesome ( I use the word in its true sense) Island.
We flew in St.Johns , rented a car and spent a wonderful week exploring the Avalon Peninsular.Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America is a few miles from the capital , St.Johns. I don't think we saw Scotland to the east but I'm sure we saw the west coast of Ireland.
Some great place names on the Avalon close to St.Johns. Hearts Delight, Cupid, Witless Bay, Harbour Grace, Bay Bulls just to name a few.
A few observations on my vacation----
1--
Flying over the interior you can't help but notice the thousands and thousands of small lakes .Close up, the lakes and bogs are connected by rocks and few stumpy trees.
2-- The waterfront in St. Johns is not the most accessible in the world. It is a very busy harbour so access to the water is
restricted.
3-- The pubs on George St. in St. Johns are the most accessible in the world. Live music in the pubs seems to be the norm.
4-- I saw the old Newfoundland flag flying in a number of places.
5-- The people we met and talked to were generous, had a great sense of humour and went out of their way to help us.
6-- Driving was a delight.
7-- Lots of oil workers in St. Johns waiting to be taken to work on the rigs.
8-- Lots of new house building going on in the St. Johns area. No bargains I think. Perhaps further up the coast.
9-- There was a great carving in the Rooms
10- Up close, icebergs are an amazing blue colour, not white
11-Although St.Johns is a city , it has a small town feel about.
You are listening to 'Ode to Newfoundland' sung by John Christopher
