First thing you do is let your imagination soar and come up with an original subject. Only original subjects will do. |
Produce a model of the subject using wire and clay. |

Using the model as a guide transfer the shape onto a block of basswood. Cut out the shape on a band saw. Patterns are also available at carving stores,
but that's cheating.Originals, only originals |
Now it's a matter of using knives and chisels to rough out the block. |

Gouges are usually used for roughing out. |
These knives and palm tools are used more for finishing and detailing. |
