A Pilgrim's Progress

This page may help you understand the carving process from start to finish.

First thing you do is let your imagination soar
and come up with an original subject.
Only original subjects will do.

Produce a model of the subject using wire and clay.
This model will be the size of the finished article.
My models are not too detailed.I'm lookin for shape.

Using the model as a guide transfer the shape onto a block of basswood. Cut out the shape on a band saw. Patterns are also available at carving stores,
but that's cheating.Originals, only originals

Now it's a matter of using knives and chisels to rough out the block.

Gouges are usually used for roughing out.
These knives and palm tools are used more for finishing and detailing.

Keep hackin' away.Bring out the appox. shape
and start on a few of the details.
It's all in the details from now on.

Now you need a face. I should have been taking pics as I carved this guy but I forgot.Next time I carve a face I'll walk you through the process. There are quite a few steps

Add some paint, a few accessories and voila you have a finished carving.
It may not be "David" but at least, I painted mine,
